Working With All of Our Heart

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. -Colossians 3:23-24

REFLECTION

Greetings prayer partner,

This month, our focus is on prayer and the workplace. Last week, we considered the nature of our work … that biblically speaking, all our work is truly worship to the Lord. This week, let’s consider the true focus of our work and the true identity of our ‘Boss’ – and the impact that it should have on our workplaces and businesses.

The Lord’s Word is directed to you and me. ‘Whatever you do’, whatever your work is, it’s ALL about HOW we work, and WHO we work for! Our title and income are not the measure of our success at work or in business, our focus and faithfulness to Jesus are! Simply put, the man or woman of God, works for One, while serving many. We must always remember that we really don’t work for our supervisors or shareholders – we work for Jesus Himself. And while the Lord often gives us human ‘bosses’ to report to, ultimately, they are just His representatives – and they should be richly blessed by our service to them, for Him.

When it comes to our work, the Lord may give us tasks from time to time that aren’t exactly what we love to do. Regardless, these tasks still deserve a wholehearted effort – because we are doing them for Him. In my work experience, what God has given me to do in various seasons, is usually not about my personal fulfillment or enjoyment -- although I do enjoy what I work at and find fulfillment in it – it is about my personal faithfulness that is the issue, and my service to others as I serve Him.

 How We Can Pray

Let me ask you a question. How is your work going? How is your heart toward the things that you have the privilege of working at every day? As this work week perhaps comes to a close, and you have some time to reflect on what it is you do, just remember your WHY – It is the Lord Christ you are serving. To me, the most amazing part of serving the Lord in our work is that, we ‘get to’! And in addition to the opportunity that we have to serve each and every day, even though we don’t deserve it, on top of the blessings, we will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward! Wow! Think about that! Not only do we ‘get to’ get up every day and serve Him, but He ultimately rewards us for our service – eternally! Thank you, Jesus!

With your particular workplace in mind, would you pray with me?

Father God, we know that Your ways are not our ways … because Your ways are always good! Father, thank you for the work that You have given us, and that we have the privilege of waking up and working at every week! You are good! Thank you, Lord, that along with rewarding our efforts here on earth, you have an inheritance reserved for us, an inheritance and a reward that rust and moth can’t destroy, and thieves cannot break in and steal! Thank you for the reminder of WHO we are serving! You are worthy of every effort from our whole heart, and we thank You for the privilege of allowing us to serve others through our service to You! It is in the matchless name of Jesus that we pray. Amen!

Rejoicing in hope,
