Transformed By Glorifying And Seeking

Praying

I will sing of Your love and justice; to You, LORD I will sing praise. I will be careful to lead a blameless life — when will You come to me? I will conduct the affairs of my house with a blameless heart.

Psalm 101:1-2

Greetings prayer partner,

Have you been seeing the cadence of our theme highlighted in Scripture, and in your life? “Glorify, seek; glorify, seek!” It feels like God has been shining a spotlight on this way of approaching prayer that is rapidly becoming a way of life. Let’s unpack this rhythm together in the context of Psalm 101.

Just as David does at the beginning of Psalm 101, we approach God with hearts of praise and we glorify Him, all focus on His unchanging character and attributes in verse 1, “I will sing of Your love and justice; to You, LORD I will sing praise.” We could pitch a tent and camp out here - there is so much to glorify Him for!

Inevitably, in the course of glorifying God, we become aware of ourselves: Mere creations marred by sin, in light of a high and holy God. When we are in Christ, we abound in hope in this moment of recognition, because the Holy Spirit transforms our desire from the desires of the flesh to desire the ways of God that we have spent time glorifying Him for! Thus, David’s praise immediately turns to expressing a commitment to seeking God in verse 2, “I will be careful to lead a blameless life — when will You come to me? I will conduct the affairs of my house with a blameless heart.”

Glorify, seek; glorify, seek!”

While David doesn’t use the word ‘seek,’ it is implied; it’s impossible to lead a blameless life and conduct daily affairs in a blameless manner without seeking God!

Through the rest of this Psalm, David contrasts the ways of the righteous with the way of the “faithless” or “perverse in heart.” The fruit of David’s seeking God comes to bear clearly in verse 5, “Whoever slanders their neighbor in secret, I will put to silence; whoever has haughty eyes and a proud heart, I do not tolerate.”

Secret slander of a neighbor, haughtiness, and pride are all sins that have an internal component - they’re less ‘outward’ compared to sins like murder or theft, but nonetheless evil in God’s sight.

Somehow, David knew about these internal sins, these sins that lie low and wreak quiet destruction in lives and relationships. How could he know what was done in secret and what dwelt in the eyes and hearts of another person Through the transformation that comes from glorifying and seeking God wholeheartedly!

When our eyes are continually fixed on what is holy and blameless while glorifying God, everything outside of God’s will and ways becomes increasingly clear.

We seek God and experience the richness of His revelation of what is, and is not, of Him. David even goes on in verse 7 to commit, “No one who practices deceit will dwell in my house.”

Only the Lord could reveal the scheming, lying, and duplicitousness in a person’s mind and heart that builds up to deceit.

In our own context, we have access to the same revelations from God through the Holy Spirit. We can seek God and discern what is godly, and what is not. Like David’s examples of secret sins and deceit, we can discern that just because someone says the ‘right’ things doesn’t mean the fruitfulness of God is in their heart. There is nothing new under the sun, and God will reveal what glorifies Him.

Walking with God and diligently seeking Him through every situation and seasons allows us to bear much fruit. When we reap the benefits of seeking God and walking according to His Word and will, we glorify Him with our obedience and our hearts overflow with praise and glory!

Glorify, seek; glorify, seek!”

Would you please join us in prayer now?

Lord, You are all-knowing and holy! You are righteous and just, loving and safe, a strong defender and my sword and shield. Your Word is unchanging, Your precepts are good and for my flourishing. I want to life my life in the rhythm of glorifying You, seeking You, then glorifying and seeking You more. As I spend time in Your presence and seeking You, transform my heart to desire what is holy and righteous, putting away the practices and temptations of the flesh. Help me to discern what is truly of You and what truly glorifies You in my life - I never want to believe a lie or be sidetracked, distracted, and divided in my heart. The more I glorify You, the more I want to see You, and the more I seek You and know You, the more I want to glorify You! In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
