A Back-to-School Prayer: Join Me in Covering Our Children

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Ephesians 3:20-21 NKJV

REFLECT

It’s hard to believe that it’s already time for kids to go back to school!

I’ll never forget the year my youngest started kindergarten. He had all new clothes, a fresh haircut, and a brand-new backpack that he wore proudly. As he stood by the door waiting for the go-ahead from his mom and me, I could see the nervous excitement in his eyes — and truth be told, I was just as nervous.

As he marched into that building, the Lord impressed something deeply on my heart: that for the next several years, teachers, administrators, coaches, and staff would hold more daily influence over him than I would. That was a sobering thought.

I asked the Lord, “How do I maintain influence in his life while he spends 8 hours or more a day with people I hardly know?”

The answer came gently, firmly, and profoundly: “I am the Influencer of those who will influence Him. I want you to get to know these people, and pray strategically, intentionally, and fervently for them!” I took that to heart. I began praying earnestly for his teachers, coaches, the lunchroom staff, paras, administrators — everyone he and my other three children encountered. I introduced myself, gave them my business card, and asked how I could be praying for them. I began to intercede for them as if they were part of my own family — because in many ways, they were.

That was nearly over 30 years ago. Now, as a grandfather, I continue to pray for those influencing my grandchildren — from nursery workers at church to their teachers and even the parents of their friends.

Whether you are a parent, a grandparent, an auntie or uncle, or simply someone who loves the next generation, we all share a sacred privilege: to be intercessors on their behalf. Let’s pray to the God who truly is the ultimate influencer — the One who holds every heart, every classroom, and every life in His hands.

Knowing that He is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above all that we ask or imagine, let’s pray together:

Thank You for caring so deeply for our children — and their children — that You inspire us to intercede for them. Thank You for Your grace and mercy, for Your provision and protection. Thank You for watching over our children when they’re away from us, and for influencing the hearts and minds of those who guide and teach them each day.

Lord, we ask that You train them up in the way they should go — and guide us to be faithful in prayer as You shape their path. We give You all the glory.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Would you take a few moments today to join me in prayer for your children, grandchildren, or children in your family, and those who influence their lives? Your prayers matter — more than you may ever know.

Rejoicing in Hope,
