When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” Acts 2: 1-11
Pentecost Sunday is this coming weekend, and marks the celebration of the Holy Spirit’s coming with power, signs, and wonders fifty days after the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus had told His disciples that He would send Another Advocate, Intercessor, Consoler, Comforter, Helper – One who would be with them forever – and when He came, EVERYONE knew it! He came BOLDLY, with a GREAT COMMOTION, and EVIDENCES that no one could deny! The same Spirit and the same power that had raised Christ Jesus from the dead, now came to LIVE in them! When the Holy Spirit moved in, their lives changed immediately – and supernaturally.
As we reflect on Pentecost this weekend, let’s reflect on this truth from Romans 8:11, as it applies to us, “The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you.” … think about that! The same Holy Spirit that came in BOLDLY like a MIGHTY, ROARING WIND at that first Pentecost, now LIVES IN US! If we have received Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, then our lives should be overflowing with EVIDENCES that He lives in us! The very SAME Advocate, Intercessor, Consoler, Comforter, Helper who was sent to THEM – has been sent to US! As we reflect on this truth, let’s ask ourselves the same question that Francis Schaeffer asked in the title of one of his books, “How Then Should We Live?”
Let's pray. Holy Spirit, thank you for coming to be OUR Advocate, Intercessor, Consoler, Comforter, and Helper … One who is with US forever. Thank you for Your work in our life. Thank you for enabling us to live this life praying, sharing, and caring the way that YOU do. Thank You that You show Yourself BOLDLY, with a GREAT COMMOTION, and EVIDENCES in our lives that no one can deny. Pour out through us MORE! Love through us MORE! Live through us MORE! We ask this in all the mighty and powerful name of the Jesus Christ – Amen!
